An international anti-war campaign that any driver
can participate in has started in Adelaide. Adelaide peace
organization NOWAR SA is asking South Australians who are opposed to a war
on Iraq to turn on their car lights while driving during the day.
NOWAR SA spokesperson, Anne McMenamin said that people who participate
should commence this action on 25th January for the duration of the
Australia Day long-weekend and beyond until it is clear that the proposed
war is called off. "In this way people can send a simple but
effective message to John Howard and the federal government that there is
a groundswell of opposition to military action against Iraq."
"Just as some politicians last year called for people to turn on their
lights to remember the 2,800 dead from the 2001 September attacks in the
U.S, so we are urging people all over the world to keep their lights on
continually during the day to prevent many more dead from a war on Iraq,"
Ms McMenamin said.
NOWAR SA suggests that people should put a sign in their car windows with
the words SAY NO TO WAR! LIGHT UP FOR PEACE. Ms McMenamin
said, "If the powers that be see continuous, highly visible opposition
every day, this will act as a break on their plans for war."
NOWAR SA will launch their campaign on Thursday 23rd January at 4:00pm
with a cavalcade through the city of cars with their light on. The
cavalcade will start at Memorial Drive (near the corner of Morphett
Street) and end in Victoria Square.
