PRESS RELEASE                              29th Nov. 2002

NOWAR (Network Opposing War And Racism)

100,000 MARCH NATIONWIDE AS WAR LOOMS

Anti-war organisers around Australia expect 100,000 to march in opposition to a war on Iraq this weekend as the United States Government continues its war preparations. War in the Persian Gulf  is looking increasingly likely, as early as January or February, the Northern Hemisphere winter. The Howard Governments   withdrawal of SAS troops from Afghanistan and its strong support for George Bush make Australian military involvement almost certain.

In Adelaide, NOWAR (the Network Opposing War And Racism) is organising a rally and march against war to commence tomorrow, Saturday , November 30  at 11.00 am from Victoria Square.

Keynote speakers will include state ALP Member of Parliament Kris Hanna, who today spoke out publicly against war with Iraq, Dr. Ian Maddocks from the Medical Association For the Prevention of War (MAPW) and Reverend Lee Levett Olsson of the Uniting Church.

Professor Maddocks is a founder of the MAPW , the Australian affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of War which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 for its work. He was founding Professor of Paliative Care at Flinders University. Rev. Lee Levett Olsson, recently appointed to Maughan Adelaide, has long been an outspoken campaigner for peace and most recently participated in the Pine Gap protests against the militarisation of space.
